Kobudo - Ancient Martial Way (Weapons)

Kobudo, literally translated, means "ancient martial way". Today, Kobudo is synonymous to weaponry. More precisely, the weapons that Kobudo describes are the traditional weapons used by the people of Okinawa in feudal times.

Shin Shi Kan is a member of the Ryukyu Kobudo Hozon Kai (The Okinawan Association for the Preservation of Old Martial Ways). The Kobudo practiced by the club corresponds to the curriculum as set by this association. The head of the association is Kinjo Masakazu of Okinawa. The ranking member of the association in Canada is Doug Smith of the Edmonton Okinawan Karate School.

Students will initially study the sai (truncheon) and the bo (staff), which form the core weapons of the style. Once competency is established, the student will progress on to other weapons while expanding their existing skills. Skills with each weapon are developed through the practice of hojo undo (supplementary exercises), kata (forms), and kumite (pre-arranged sparring). The techniques practiced are functional, providing insight into the history and purpose of each motion.

It is required that a student have familiarity with basic Karate techniques before being admitted to the Kobudo class.
